Olympic Stadium Final Wander

I have been photographing the Olympic Stadium since 2008 and the gods of architecture and photography smiled upon me today. During a final wander I was able to sneak onto the floor and see the floating ceiling for the first time.  It appears they are redoing the floor – which, I think, is a good sign for its future.

It Rained A Little This Morning

Happy one year anniversary in Cambodia to City of Water!

I have tried, and failed, to really capture the flooding since I moved to Cambodia one year ago:

While driving with a HD Hero 2 Go Pro – here.

With my waterproof camera an Olympus StylusTough-8010 – here – which does well in bright sun but rather poorly in rainy, low-light environment, especially when combined with traffic movement.

One afternoon, I did get some shots on foot near my house with my Nikon D7000 – but that involved several ponchos and plastic bags.

This was a rare opportunity to shoot the flooding from inside a van.

WRAPPED FUTURE

Source – LIM SOKCHANLINA

“The land enclosed is no longer a presence, as if what was displaced or destroyed at these sites no longer matters. Memory has been traded for development. What will be erected with a strict belief that the future is the only concern? These fences are wrapping the future, standing in place of what was forgotten or never even known.”

Fences. Makeshift enclosures. Dividing lines. These increasingly present indicators of change define much of Phnom Penh’s topography today. Since the onset of heightened urban construction in 2009, Lim Sokchanlina has been concerned with the border-making practices of national development schemes that promise a better “New Phnom Penh”.

With both archival and artistic impulse, Lim repeatedly photographs these temporary partitions at especially contentious sites, seeking to provoke questions about real and representational borders, their physical and psychological ability to divide public and private, past and future, known and unknown.

Carefully composed under the brightness of midday sunlight, Lim’s corrugated color fields flatten the imposing fences into mundane facades. Colors, patterns, dents, rust, dirt, and markings invite a painterly inspection. His titles serve to keep a record of what was where when. The ghost of a landmark colonial building is remembered in Former Ministry of Tourism, Sothearos Boulevard and Sisowath Quay, 2009. Cambodia’s iconic Corbusier-trained architect Vann Molyvann’s work is mourned in Former Preah Suramarit National Theatre, National Assembly Street, 2009. Communities of displaced people are honored in Former Borei Keila, South side, 2012.

Isolated to the image, away from their bustling surroundings and ephemeral fate, the fences become permanent, recorded landmarks. As such, what they conceal, and ultimately what they will reveal, can be called into question.

Driving Phnom Penh

If there is an argument that cities have speeds from which they should be viewed – if New York should be seen by foot,  Los Angeles by car, Copenhagen by bike – then Phnom Penh should be seen by moto. The speed and scale of a moto make sense here – this isn’t a city of walkers and cars isolate you from the noise, the heat, the sounds and the smells so inherent to the experience of traveling the city.

So here is Phnom Penh via Honda Super Cub.

I drove for about 2 hours and the camera was set to take 1 photo per second – about 7,200 stills. I cut some of them into quick videos. After the Our City Festival and Urban Lab Phnom Penh wrap up I’ll try to put together the route map and maybe something a little more coherent and less spastic. I was really hoping for some rain and flooding footage but the rain gods are uncooperative. Nevertheless it was good fun.

A big thank you to Dan Korn for lending me his HD Hero 2 Go Pro. Here is some of the footage:

From Phnom Penh to Takmao on National Highway 1. 100 meters to my left is the Basaac River and 100 meters to my right several thousand hectares of wetlands. Notice you can see neither and everything in sight is paved. This is the site for the studio I’m teaching this semester Projecting Phnom Penh –Description.

Some shots slowed down and spliced together.

And here is the entire 2 hours compressed into 10 minutes – a little manic.
